Corsham Area Rethink Rubbish Directory

Water Image Welcome to Corsham Community Area's Rethink Rubbish Directory! (In association with the Wiltshire Wildlife Trust)

Corsham Community Area's Rethink Rubbish Directory is your local A-Z guide about what items can be reused and recycled locally. The directory also includes many tips on how to reduce rubbish. By using the directory we hope local people will reduce, reuse and recycle goods that would otherwise have been thrown away to end up being buried in a hole in the ground.

Shops, charities, organisations and individuals are all listed alongside the items they take for reuse or recycling. Where there are no local facilities for reusing or recycling an item, the next nearest location we know of is given.

If you think we have missed something, or you would like to add in some more details, then please do contact us.

Click on a letter, or area of interest, to move through the directory.

Abandoned Vehicles
Report an abandoned vehicle to the Police on: 01249 654455. Take a note of its registration, location, make, model, colour, condition and whether it is taxed.

Aerosol Cans
At present aerosol cans should not be put in can banks in Wiltshire. About a billion are used in the UK each year. Try to use pump action dispensers instead.

Aluminium Cans
Aluminium cans can be put in can recycling banks. (See also Cans and Tins). If you are putting cans in an ‘aluminium can only’ collecting point, or collecting them for a 'cash for cans' scheme, check they are aluminium by seeing if the can has an 'alu' mark. Aluminium cans have shiny bottoms and are not magnetic.

Kerbside Collection - see Kerbside Collection below.

Middlefield Day Centre. (see Contact Information page below).

Aluminium Foil
Reuse tip: If you are storing food try to use washable containers or reuse margarine tubs. lf you are collecting aluminium foil, make sure it is foil i.e. pie trays, not laminated foil packaging like crisp packets. If it springs back in your hand after being scrunched it is not the right sort for recycling. Try and make sure your foil is clean.

Kerbside Collection - see Kerbside Collection below.

Middlefield Day Centre (see Contact Information page below).

Batteries (See separate entry for Car Batteries below)
Try and use rechargeable batteries or mains in preference to household batteries, as these are currently very difficult to recycle. Don't keep batteries together as this can affect the life of batteries. If batteries have to be thrown away don't throw them away in a bundle all together, as some not completely dead ones could interact with live ones and create a danger.

Rechargeable batteries come in several different types - nickel cadmium (NiCads), nickel metal hydride and lithium ion. For more information about batteries see the British Battery Manufacturers Association website at: www.bbma.co.uk. For Nicad battery-recycling contact the manufacturer or distributor to find out more or see the ReBat web site at www.rebat.com If taking your Nicad batteries to a Household Recycling Centre for disposal inform the supervisor on arrival.

Button cell batteries from watches and cameras can often be returned to the shop where they were purchased.

Carrier Bags
Say No to Unwanted Bags (SNUB). Around 80 million carrier bags are used in Wiltshire each year. Try and reuse plastic bags as much as possible or buy a cloth bag, or supermarket 'bag for life' to carry your shopping in, rather than plastic bags. Polythene Envelopes
Polyprint Mailing Films. Both printed and unpainted polythene wrappers and bags from whatever source are recycled provided ALL paper labels, sellotape, sticky residue, food remnants and foreign objects have been removed. The only exception is polythene marked 'degradable' - if any of this is in a batch for recycling then the whole batch is rejected and sent to a landfill site. Polythene products normally stretch fairly easily and the recycling codes that you need to look for are numbers 2 and 4.

Mark 'recycled material' and send to Polyprint Mailing Films Ltd, Mackintosh Road, Rackheath Ind. Estate, Rackheath, Norwich NR13 6LJ. It takes approximately 200,000 polythene wrappers to make one tonne of recyclable waste, all of which is hand sorted by Polyprint staff. After being recycled the polythene is made into plastic bin liners and fertiliser sacks.

Pyrex Glass
Pyrex glass is excluded from the glass recycling barks as it has been heat treated and has a different chemical composition to ordinary glass and melts at a different temperature to glass bottles and jars. So it can't be recycled in the normal glass recycling process. If it is mixed in a normal glass bank, the Pyrex doesn't melt fully and bottles made from the recycled glass will fracture. The same applies if brown glass cookware and ceramic bottle stoppers are put in a glass bank.
