Composting

Recycle Image Remember, composting is one of the top environmentally friendly things you can do:

1. You'll be reducing the amount of waste that goes to landfill.
2. Modern compost bins mean making compost is hygienic - no nasty smells!
3. You'll be saving money - no need to buy compost.
4. You can use the compost you make for your pot plants or for spreading on the garden (or give it to someone you know!).
5. You'll be helping save our peat bogs (which are home to rare and endangered wildlife) by not buying commercial compost, much of which contains peat stripped out of peat bogs.

Fact Sheets & Hotline
Composting can be a bit tricky to get right sometimes, so the Wiltshire Wildlife Trust has kindly supplied NRG with a Composting Fact Sheet.

Community Composting
An opportunity exists for Neston to become one of the first communities in Wiltshire to have a community composting scheme.

If a suitable site can be found (does not have to be huge - 5m x 15m would suffice) there is advice and financial support available to get the scheme up and running.

The area would be fenced with bays erected to contain the compost at different stages of decomposition. The site will generate income through the sale of the finished compost.

It is likely that a small community like Neston could compost 50-70 toms of green waste per year.

It would need around 8 hours a week to maintain the site. This could be covered by a team of volunteers or someone could be paid using the money generated by the sale of compost. The site would only be open at certain times, usually two evenings plus Saturday morning each week.

NRG is appealing for help in finding a suitable site in the village. If you can help in this matter, or know someone who may be able to help, please contact us.
